President’s Message
It is a pleasure to see the second issue of this wonderful publication, ZOA’s The College Zionist. This magazine was conceived as the flagship publication of committed Zionist student activism in the United States and the first two issues already show that it is not disappointing expectations. On the contrary, the range and depth of the articles, produced by different students studying for different degrees from colleges large and small, elite and public, from around the country, give heart-warming testimony to their idealism, intelligence and commitment to Zionism.
In these times, when many are despairing of the bonds that bind American Jewry to Israel and Jewish history, it is immensely heartening to see that a new generation of smart, young activists, instilled with a love and profound understanding of Israel and the problems it faces, is being cultivated and heard. They are also proudly promoting the term ‘Zionist’, elevating this term to its true meaning—one who loves and supports a Jewish state for the Jewish people based on historical, legal and religious principles and truths.
The quality of the articles to be found in The College Zionist is consistently high and sophisticated. In these pages, readers will find informative pieces about a variety of issues of concern to campus activists—dissecting the mistakes of the Gaza withdrawal; exposing apologists for Islamofascist terrorism in our universities, investigative research into manifestations of campus anti-Semitism, a critique of the flawed and damaging role played by the United Nations in Lebanon following the recent Hezbollah war, discussion of terrorist apologists masquerading as moderates in the academy, and clearly telling the truth about the Arab war against Israel.
It also speaks highly of the stature that ZOA’s The College Zionist already enjoys by seeing that this issue includes an important and fascinating interview with the former Israel Defense Forces Chief-of-Staff, Lieutenant-General Moshe Yaalon, who is in great demand as a speaker, writer and advisor. Equally impressive is the high quality of the production and lay-out of the publication.
We are proud to say that we have had a remarkable number of quality articles by outstanding students submitted to us for inclusion but due to space limitations, only a handful could be published. Choosing amongst such a fine array of essays was a difficult task indeed, yet it is inspiring to see how many young college students are knowledgeable and energetic and want to participate.
We at the ZOA offer special thanks and kudos to Julie Sager, her staff, and the many student interns who made volume two of ZOA’s The College Zionist such a success. Mazal Tov to all the great student writers as well. We look forward to watching your growth as activists and meeting those who will surely follow.
